Commentaries -- Jan Willem Drijvers

A complete philological and historical commentary on the Res Gestae is still not available. There are commentaries now on Books 14-19 by P. de Jonge and on Books 19-25 by J. den Boeft et al. Moreover, there are commentaries on aspects of Ammianus' work, like Brok's commentary on Julian's Persian expedition or the one by Szidat on the first phase of Julian's imperial rule. The Budé edition of Ammianus' text contains elaborate notes.
